Exhibition Openng and Charity Fundraiser – Free Entry

Saturday 7th November, 2 – 6pm

Matt Gartside went to Romania in 1992 to produce a folio of images for the charity Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire, to promote the refurbishment of a prison into a hospital.

This if the first time they have been exhibited as a single body of work for over two decades but are as relevant today as they were 24 years ago, perhaps even more so. The people in these photographs are in a foreign land, not long after the fall of the communist dictator Ceaucescu . Some may think that we have nothing in common with people so far away in geography, time and politics. These pictures of grandparents, parents and children powerfully illustrate that this is not the case.

A proportion of the proceeds will be donated to charity, as well as the proceeds from a raffle. First prize will be one of the images from the exhibition, framed and signed by Matt Gartside. Raffle tickets are just £1 each. Either buy at the event, pop into the studio or pledge a ticket by contacting Aly 07773 583072, Matt 07803 151699, or comment below. Thank you.

A Virtual Tour of 22B

The new gallery at Studio22B has been open for a few weeks now. Quite a few of you have called in to see us. If you haven’t been able to here’s a taster of what you’ll find. We are open Tuesday to Saturday 12.30pm to 5.30pm.

Come to The Grand Opening of the new studio and gallery.

Gallery setting

SUNDAY 19th JULY 12-6PM  AND THURSDAY 23rd JULY 6-10PM

Our new space is nearly ready and pretty spiffy its looking too. Come and marvel at it this weekend, chat to the artists, have a drink and slice of cake. The walls and floors are painted (you can see what fun Aly had below!) and the all important lighting, designed by Matt, has lit up Soughbridge Mill. Then all we have to do is hang some pictures and set up the Darkside Photography studio. Aly is already installed in her painting studio annexe, which will also be open to view.

We have two dates to choose from, Sunday daytime or Thursday evening. On the Thursday evening Matt will be running a photography workshop (portraits) which you are welcome to observe. To join in the workshop properly, please follow the link to book. Aly will be on hand for chats and tea making.

There will be original artworks, prints and cards by painter ACTelfer and photographer Matt Gartside of Darkside Photography

Countdown – Day Two.

An exciting day today in transforming a corner of a grotty mill into a sanctuary of creativity – the floor got painted. And rather lush it is looking too. There was a classic ‘Some Mothers do ‘ave ’em’ moment at the end when Aly foolhardily decided to re-enter across the wet floor to retrieve the paint tin lid. It turns out that wet oil-based paint on a smooth floor has NO FRICTION what so ever and within half a second she was flat on her face sliding across the floor like a human curling stone. As no purchase could be achieved on the floor, she had to crawl out, covered in paint with a sore elbow. Shamefully, there were expletives.

Studio&Gallery22B – work in progress

We have been working on our new digs. The new space should be rather lovely by the time we have finished. Our first job is filling annoying cracks and bumps in ceiling, walls and floors. Then we will be on to painting. We are going for white and just a couple of shades of grey – hence the monochromatic theme to this post.

Our home-made blinds, made on my Grandma’s 1951 festival of Britain Singer Sewing machine, will be coming from the old studio. There will be four main areas. One for mount cutting and ‘putting in’, a retail area for prints and cards, and the two main ones of a gallery wall for framed work and a photographer’s studio for portraits, studio shoot and workshops.

We are aiming to be in at the beginning of July and definitely all ship shape for our grand ‘Open Studio&Gallery Warming’ on Sunday July 19th. Watch this space for more details of this event. If you’re wondering where the painter is going to be, she’s next door in a self contained messy space/padded cell.

Maiden Journey Exhibition

This is a mixed exhibition at Longitude Gallery in Clitheroe, in which Aly has about 9 works. It is in partnership with Maidenbridge Gallery in Tatham near Lancaster where Aly will have two works. Find out more from Longitude’s website. It is a good opportunity to see most of the brand new hot off the presses Boulders series all together, along with some Clatterings. Here is a taster:

WATCH THIS SPACE

image

This is your first glimpse of our new exhibition space/photography studio. Next door is a separate space for the messy painter. We will still be in the same building, but at the top of the stairs rather than at the end of a gloomy corridor. At the moment, lights are going in and a few things are being fixed. The next job will be to repaint the floor. It is all going to look rather lush. Keep an eye on this page for further updates.

Fame!

Both Aly and Matt have been featured in Burnley’s Lifestyle and Tourism Guide. This is in the style of a glossy magazine and as we speak 20,000 copies of it are being distributed throughout the North West. If you see one, grab one, as they are free! There is a double page spread on each artist featured, 6 in all. Matt also has also done the photography for an article on paragliding. In case you don’t see a copy, here are some sneak previews. They are just snaps of the magazine taken on Aly’s phone to give an idea. Much classier in reality!

This is just some of what we have available. Pop in Weds – Saturday afternoons to look through the browers. There are actually 3 of them – a traditional one, an old magazine rack and a bread bin! Prices from £22.
