More Waves and Ripples

A second chance to catch the show at Studio22B

We had a great time at Artsmill and were sad to leave. Invigilating the exhibition and talking to visitors about our work was both interesting and motivating. We got really good feedback and comments which has given us a boost and a positive start to 2016.

Our pictures (minus sold pieces!) are now back ‘home’ at 22B and we will be hanging them over the next week, to open on Thursday 25th February at our usual time of 2-6pm.

Romanian Lives exhibition raises Â£153

Dr Kathy Tedd receiving the cheque and framed photograph from Matt.

We travelled to Bingley to meet Dr Kathy Tedd from Jubiliee Outreach Yorkshire. This charity is still going strong supporting Romanian people with practical help. It started with Dr Tedd supporting a Romanian doctor who, thanks to the vagaries of the Ceaucescu regime, only had a very basic medical kit and no drugs at all, and has ended up with entire hospitals and support centres for vulnerable people across Romania. Learn more about their work here.

It was a very emotional exprience for Matt as it was the first time he had been able to talk to someone else who knew what it was like out in Romania in those conditions, for over 20 years. Dr Tedd put names to faces in Matt’s photographs and added her own anecdotes to his.

Thank you to every one that donated.

Romanian Lives – An Exhibition about People Like Us.

Exhibition Openng and Charity Fundraiser – Free Entry

Saturday 7th November, 2 – 6pm

Matt Gartside went to Romania in 1992 to produce a folio of images for the charity Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire, to promote the refurbishment of a prison into a hospital.

This if the first time they have been exhibited as a single body of work for over two decades but are as relevant today as they were 24 years ago, perhaps even more so. The people in these photographs are in a foreign land, not long after the fall of the communist dictator Ceaucescu . Some may think that we have nothing in common with people so far away in geography, time and politics. These pictures of grandparents, parents and children powerfully illustrate that this is not the case.

A proportion of the proceeds will be donated to charity, as well as the proceeds from a raffle. First prize will be one of the images from the exhibition, framed and signed by Matt Gartside. Raffle tickets are just £1 each. Either buy at the event, pop into the studio or pledge a ticket by contacting Aly 07773 583072, Matt 07803 151699, or comment below. Thank you.

Studio&Gallery22B – work in progress

We have been working on our new digs. The new space should be rather lovely by the time we have finished. Our first job is filling annoying cracks and bumps in ceiling, walls and floors. Then we will be on to painting. We are going for white and just a couple of shades of grey – hence the monochromatic theme to this post.

Our home-made blinds, made on my Grandma’s 1951 festival of Britain Singer Sewing machine, will be coming from the old studio. There will be four main areas. One for mount cutting and ‘putting in’, a retail area for prints and cards, and the two main ones of a gallery wall for framed work and a photographer’s studio for portraits, studio shoot and workshops.

We are aiming to be in at the beginning of July and definitely all ship shape for our grand ‘Open Studio&Gallery Warming’ on Sunday July 19th. Watch this space for more details of this event. If you’re wondering where the painter is going to be, she’s next door in a self contained messy space/padded cell.

We are moving – but only down the corridor. This will be your first opportunity to see our new space – or rather spaces as Aly has a separate space for gloriously messy painting in splendid solitude and Matt has a pristine photography studio which will also be a gallery for both of us and maybe other artists in the future.

Natural Eye

Ice Matt Gartside 22" x 33"

If you want an excuse for a trip to Clitheroe to take in the tearooms, charity shops and quirky independent retailers, you must go to see Matt’s exhibition at Longitude Gallery in Clitheroe. It is called ‘Natural Eye’ and Matt has 7 important, large and best of all beautiful pieces in it. Its a really interesting exhibition comprising of 4 photographers each with a different approach. It is comparatively rare for a British gallery to promote photography so well done to Andy and Sarah at Longitude.

It opened on Saturday 10th and is on throughout January and February. Matt does all his own printing and has even made the frames using upcycled wood which harmonise beautifully with the subject matter. They are glued together with blood, sweat and tears and are retailing at £295. There are smaller mounted prints in the galleries browser from £50. Here are some photos from the opening today.

Aly is also looking forward to exhibiting at Longitude, hopefully sometime around May. Watch this space!

The Drawing Office

Here’s our studio half a century ago when it was the drawing office of Bristol Tractors. That’s half a century of pencil wielding at 22B. Come and see how things have changed by popping into the studio. You can come to a workshop, Open Studio, exhibition or just call in. If the A board is out we are open!
